One of the most common questions we get asked is how often should I PAT test? The answer depends on the type of equipment and the environment it is used in.
The IET Code of Practice
The IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment is the industry reference document for PAT testing. It provides recommended testing intervals based on equipment type and environment.
Recommended Testing Frequencies
- Office / Shop: IT equipment every 24 months, movable equipment every 12–24 months
- Industrial: Portable appliances every 6–12 months
- Construction site: All equipment every 3 months
- Hotel / Guest house: All equipment every 12 months
- Rental property: Landlord appliances at every change of tenancy
Factors That Affect Frequency
- The environment: Dusty, wet, or hot environments cause faster deterioration
- How the equipment is used: Frequently moved or handled equipment wears faster
- Who uses it: Equipment used by the public may need more frequent testing
- The type of equipment: Higher-risk Class I equipment needs more frequent testing than double-insulated Class II
