Getting organised before your PAT test makes the process faster and ensures nothing gets missed.
Before Your PAT Test
- List all portable appliances: Walk through every room and note every item with a plug including cupboards and under desks
- Ensure access: Make sure the tester can reach every appliance
- Inform staff: Let your team know testing is happening so they can save work on computers
- Gather previous records: Have records from previous PAT tests available
- Note any concerns: If any appliances spark, overheat, or behave unusually, let the tester know
During the PAT Test
- The tester works through each appliance systematically
- Each appliance is briefly unplugged (30–60 seconds)
- Passed appliances get a green label; failed get a red label
After the PAT Test
- You receive a certificate listing all appliances and results
- Failed appliances should be taken out of service immediately
- Keep the certificate on file for insurance and inspections
- Set a reminder for your next PAT test date
