Do New Appliances Need PAT Testing?

Do you need to PAT test brand new appliances? The answer may surprise you.

A question we hear frequently: I have just bought a new kettle, does it need PAT testing straight away?

The Short Answer

Technically, no. New appliances from the manufacturer should meet safety standards and are covered by warranty. However, there are important caveats.

Why You Might Still Want to Test New Appliances

  • Damage in transit: Appliances can be damaged during shipping. A visual inspection may not catch internal damage.
  • Record keeping: Adding the new appliance to your PAT register from day one keeps your records complete.
  • Insurance requirements: Some policies require that all appliances have current PAT certificates, regardless of age.
  • Due diligence: In the event of an incident, having a PAT record for every appliance demonstrates thoroughness.

What We Recommend

At minimum, carry out a visual inspection of any new appliance before putting it into service. Check that the plug is correctly wired, the cable is undamaged, and the casing is intact. Then include it in your next scheduled PAT test.

If you want new appliances added to your PAT register straight away, we can include them at no extra charge. Get in touch to discuss.
