PAT Testing Portable Heaters — Winter Electrical Safety

Portable heaters are high-risk appliances. Make sure yours are safe before winter.

As temperatures drop, portable heaters come out of storage. These high-powered appliances need careful attention.

Why Heaters Are High Risk

  • High wattage: 2,000 to 3,000W, close to the socket maximum
  • Stored for months: Dust and cable damage during storage
  • Left unattended: Running when people leave the room
  • Near combustibles: Paper, curtains, furniture too close
  • Extension leads: Often used with leads not rated for the wattage

Before Using a Heater This Winter

  1. Check cable and plug for damage
  2. Check casing for cracks
  3. Ensure it has a current PAT test label
  4. Plug directly into a wall socket, never an extension
  5. Keep 1 metre clearance from combustibles
