RCDs (Residual Current Devices) and PAT testing are both important but do different things.
What Is an RCD?
An RCD monitors electricity flow through a circuit. If it detects current leaking to earth, it cuts the power in milliseconds.
Does an RCD Replace PAT Testing?
No. An RCD is a last line of defence when a fault occurs. PAT testing is preventive, identifying faults before they cause danger. Both are necessary:
- PAT testing: Identifies and removes faulty appliances
- RCD protection: Cuts power if a fault occurs despite prevention
RCD Testing
RCDs should be tested regularly by pressing the test button. This is separate from PAT testing.
PAT testing catches faults before your RCD has to. Book your PAT test with Green Tag.
