PAT Testing for Restaurants & Cafes — What You Need to Know

PAT testing for restaurants explained. What is required, how often to test, and what it costs. Professional PAT testing from Green Tag.

Commercial kitchens rely on a huge range of electrical appliances. In a hot, humid environment with liquid spills, electrical safety is critical. PAT testing helps protect your staff, customers, and your EHO rating.

What Appliances Need Testing in a Restaurant?

Any portable electrical appliance that has a plug needs PAT testing. In a typical restaurant, this includes:

  • Kettles, microwaves, and kitchen appliances
  • Computers, monitors, and printers
  • Phone chargers and extension leads
  • Heaters and fans
  • Any specialist equipment with a plug

How Often Should a Restaurant Be PAT Tested?

The IET Code of Practice provides guidance on testing frequency based on the type of equipment and the environment. For most restaurants, annual testing is recommended. Higher-risk environments may require testing every 3–6 months.

Is PAT Testing a Legal Requirement for Restaurants & Cafes?

There is no single law that mandates PAT testing by name. However, the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 require that all electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the recognised way to demonstrate compliance.

What Happens During a PAT Test?

Each appliance undergoes a visual inspection followed by electronic testing using calibrated equipment. We check for damage, measure earth continuity and insulation resistance, and verify the appliance is safe. Appliances that pass are labelled with a test date and next test due date.
