PAT Testing Second-Hand Equipment
Buying second-hand electrical equipment is a smart way to save money — but it comes with risks. You do not know the history of the equipment, how it has been used or stored, or whether it has any developing faults. PAT testing second-hand equipment before putting it into service is essential.
Why Second-Hand Equipment Needs Testing
- Unknown history: You do not know if the equipment was properly maintained by the previous owner
- Hidden damage: Equipment may have been dropped, water-damaged, or poorly repaired
- Recalled items: Some second-hand equipment may be subject to safety recalls that were never actioned
- Modified equipment: Previous owners may have made unsafe modifications — wrong fuses, replacement cables of incorrect rating, bodged repairs
- Storage conditions: Equipment stored in damp conditions can develop insulation faults that are not visible externally
Legal Position
If you buy second-hand equipment for use in your business, you are responsible for ensuring it is safe before your staff or the public use it. The fact that you bought it second-hand is not a defence — the duty of care is yours from the moment you put it into service.
What to Check Before Buying
- Visual condition — look for damage, burn marks, frayed cables, cracked casings
- Age — very old equipment may not meet current safety standards
- Previous PAT test labels — has it been tested recently?
- Plug condition — is the correct fuse fitted? Is the cable grip secure?
- Manufacturer recalls — check the product against the government's product recall database
