PAT Testing Three-Phase Equipment: What You Need to Know

Guide to PAT testing three-phase portable equipment. Industrial equipment testing for workshops, factories and commercial kitchens.

PAT Testing Three-Phase Equipment

Three-phase portable equipment is common in industrial workshops, factories, commercial kitchens, and construction sites across Greater Manchester and Northwest England. Testing three-phase equipment requires additional knowledge and equipment beyond standard single-phase PAT testing.

What is Three-Phase Equipment?

Three-phase electrical equipment uses three live conductors instead of one, providing higher power output. Common examples include:

  • Industrial motors and compressors
  • Large workshop machines (lathes, milling machines, large drills)
  • Commercial kitchen equipment (large ovens, dishwashers)
  • Heavy-duty power tools
  • Welding equipment
  • Large industrial fans and blowers

How Three-Phase PAT Testing Differs

Three-phase PAT testing requires:

  • Appropriate test equipment: Standard single-phase PAT testers cannot test three-phase equipment. A three-phase adapter or a dedicated three-phase tester is needed.
  • Additional knowledge: The tester must understand three-phase systems, star and delta configurations, and how to interpret test results for three-phase equipment.
  • Earth continuity testing: Must be performed between the earth connection and all accessible metal parts, as with single-phase, but with consideration of the three-phase supply configuration.
  • Insulation resistance testing: Must be performed between all live conductors and earth, and in some cases between live conductors.

Common Issues We Find

Three-phase equipment tends to be more expensive and longer-lived than single-phase items, which means we often find:

  • Very old equipment that has never been tested
  • Worn cables from years of industrial use
  • Modifications and repairs that may not meet current standards
  • Incorrect fusing or protection
