What Happens During a PAT Test
If you have never had your equipment PAT tested before, you might be wondering what is actually involved. Here is a step-by-step guide to what happens when Green Tag PAT visits your premises.
Step 1: Arrival and Setup
We arrive at the agreed time with our calibrated PAT testing equipment, labels, and documentation. We will ask you to show us around the premises so we can identify all portable appliances and plan an efficient route through the building.
Step 2: Asset Register
As we work through the premises, we build an asset register — a list of every portable appliance, its location, make, model, and a unique identification number. If you already have an asset register from previous testing, we will update it.
Step 3: Visual Inspection
Every appliance undergoes a thorough visual inspection before any electrical testing. We check:
- The cable for damage, cuts, kinks, or wear
- The plug for cracks, bent pins, and correct fuse rating
- Cable entry points into the plug and the appliance
- The appliance casing for damage, cracks, or signs of overheating
- Correct labelling and markings
- General condition and suitability for the environment
Many faults are caught at this stage — visual inspection is the most important part of PAT testing.
Step 4: Electrical Tests
Appliances that pass visual inspection are then electrically tested. The specific tests depend on the class of equipment:
- Earth Continuity: Checks the earth connection is intact (Class I equipment only)
- Insulation Resistance: Checks that insulation between live parts and accessible parts is adequate
- Earth Leakage: Measures any current leaking to earth during operation
- Polarity: Checks wiring is correct (where applicable)
Step 5: Labelling
Each appliance receives a label showing: pass or fail, the date of testing, the tester, and when the next test is due. Failed items receive a red FAIL label and are taken out of service immediately.
Step 6: Documentation
After testing, you receive a complete asset register with all test results, a certificate of testing, and details of any failed items. This documentation is your proof of compliance for insurance, inspections, and audits.
How Long Does It Take?
As a rough guide: 50 appliances takes 2-3 hours, 100 appliances takes half a day, and 200+ appliances is typically a full day. The exact time depends on access and the complexity of the equipment.
