Complete electrical safety checklist for new business owners. PAT testing, fixed wiring, and compliance requirements explained.

Electrical Safety Checklist for New Businesses

Starting a new business is exciting, but electrical safety obligations can seem overwhelming. This checklist covers everything a new business owner in the UK needs to know about keeping their workplace electrically safe — from PAT testing to fixed wiring inspections.

1. Fixed Wiring Inspection (EICR)

Before you move equipment in, ensure your premises has a valid Electrical Installation Condition Report (EICR). This is an inspection of the fixed wiring — the sockets, distribution board, lighting circuits, and wiring within the walls. Commercial premises should have an EICR every 5 years. This is separate from PAT testing.

2. PAT Testing Your Equipment

Every portable electrical appliance you bring into your business premises should be visually inspected and, where appropriate, electrically tested. This includes:

  • Computers, monitors, printers
  • Kettles, microwaves, fridges
  • Desk lamps, phone chargers
  • Extension leads and power strips
  • Any tools or equipment specific to your trade

Second-hand equipment is especially important to test — you do not know its history or condition.

3. Risk Assessment

Conduct a basic electrical risk assessment for your premises. Identify potential hazards — overloaded sockets, cables across walkways, equipment near water, and inadequate lighting. Document your findings and the actions you take to mitigate risks.

4. Insurance Requirements

Check your business insurance policy. Most public liability and employers liability policies require you to maintain electrical equipment and may specifically mention PAT testing. Operating without it could invalidate your cover.

5. Staff Training

Ensure your staff know the basics: do not use damaged equipment, report faults immediately, do not overload sockets, and never attempt DIY electrical repairs.

6. Ongoing Maintenance Schedule

Set up a schedule for regular PAT testing — typically annually for most business equipment, though higher-risk environments (construction, catering) may need more frequent testing.
