PAT Testing Frequency Guide
One of the most common questions we receive is: how often should PAT testing be done? The answer depends on the type of equipment, the environment it is used in, and the level of risk. There is no single legal requirement for a specific frequency — the regulations require that equipment is maintained in a safe condition, and the appropriate testing frequency is determined by risk assessment.
IET Code of Practice Recommendations
The IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment provides recommended initial testing frequencies. These are guidelines, not legal requirements, but they represent industry best practice:
| Environment | Equipment Type | Suggested Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Office / shop | IT equipment (computers, printers) | Every 2-4 years |
| Office / shop | Movable equipment (kettles, fans) | Every 1-2 years |
| Office / shop | Extension leads | Every 1-2 years |
| Industrial / commercial kitchen | Portable appliances | Every 6-12 months |
| Construction site | 110V tools | Every 3 months |
| Construction site | 240V equipment | Every 3 months |
| Hotel / guest accommodation | Guest room equipment | Every 1-2 years |
| Schools | General equipment | Every 1-2 years |
Factors That Increase Frequency
You should test more frequently if:
- Equipment is used in harsh environments (dust, moisture, outdoor use)
- Equipment is moved frequently (portable tools, market stall equipment)
- Equipment is used by the public
- Equipment is old or has a history of faults
- Your business involves vulnerable people (care homes, nurseries)
- Your insurance policy specifies a testing frequency
Can You Test Less Frequently?
For low-risk environments — such as a small office where equipment sits on desks and is rarely moved — you may be able to justify longer intervals between formal PAT tests, provided you conduct regular visual inspections. However, most businesses find that annual testing is the simplest and most defensible approach.
Our Recommendation
For most businesses in Greater Manchester and Northwest England, we recommend annual PAT testing as a practical, cost-effective baseline. We can advise on the appropriate frequency for your specific situation during our first visit.
