PAT Testing Kitchen Appliances - Kettles, Microwaves, Toasters and More

Kitchen appliances are among the highest-risk items for PAT testing.

Kitchen appliances are some of the most heavily used and highest-risk appliances in any workplace. They are exposed to moisture, heat, and frequent handling.

Why Kitchen Appliances Are Higher Risk

  • Moisture: Kitchens have water, steam, and spills near appliances
  • Heat: Kettles, toasters, and microwaves generate significant heat
  • Heavy use: A workplace kettle may be boiled 20 or more times per day
  • Multiple users: Shared appliances get rougher treatment

Testing Frequency

We recommend annual PAT testing for workplace kitchen appliances as a minimum. In busy commercial kitchens, six-monthly testing may be more appropriate.

Tips for Kitchen Electrical Safety

  • Keep appliances away from water sources
  • Dry hands before touching any plug
  • Clean appliances regularly to prevent grease buildup
  • Replace worn or damaged appliances promptly
