PAT Testing Labels Explained — What Do the Stickers Mean?

What do PAT testing stickers mean? Green pass labels, red fail labels, and what they tell you.

After a PAT test, every appliance receives a label. Here is what the different labels mean.

Green PASS Label

A green label means the appliance passed all visual and electronic tests. The label shows: the word PASS or TESTED, date of test, next test due date, tester name or ID, and asset number.

Red FAIL Label

A red label means the appliance failed one or more tests. It must be taken out of service immediately until repaired and retested.

Do Labels Expire?

Labels do not legally expire, but they show a recommended retest date. If the retest date has passed, the appliance should be retested.

Can I Remove PAT Labels?

You should not remove PAT labels as they provide visible evidence of testing. If a label is damaged or falls off, note it for your next PAT test visit.
