Electrical Safety Guide for Summer Events and Outdoor Functions

Electrical safety guide for summer fetes, outdoor events and festivals. PAT testing requirements for portable equipment used outdoors.

Electrical Safety for Summer Events

Summer events — fetes, festivals, outdoor markets, and charity functions — bring unique electrical safety challenges. Portable equipment is used outdoors where it is exposed to weather, uneven ground, and public access. Whether you are organising a village fete in Cheshire or a food festival in Manchester, electrical safety must be planned properly.

PAT Testing for Event Equipment

Every portable electrical appliance used at an outdoor event should be PAT tested. This includes:

  • Generators and distribution boards
  • Extension leads and cable reels
  • Catering equipment — urns, griddles, coffee machines, refrigeration
  • Sound and PA systems
  • Lighting — festoon lights, portable floodlights
  • Fairground and amusement equipment
  • Power tools for setup and breakdown

Outdoor-Specific Risks

Outdoor events introduce risks that indoor venues do not:

  • Rain and moisture: Use IP-rated equipment designed for outdoor use. Indoor-rated appliances must be protected from rain.
  • Trip hazards: Cable routes must be planned, protected with cable covers, and clearly marked.
  • Ground conditions: Generators and equipment should be on stable, level ground — not sitting in puddles.
  • Public access: All electrical equipment should be positioned where the public cannot access cables, connections, or generators.

RCD Protection

All outdoor electrical supplies must be protected by a 30mA residual current device (RCD). This is a legal requirement, not a recommendation. RCDs cut the power in milliseconds if they detect an earth fault — potentially saving lives in wet conditions.

Event Organiser Responsibilities

If you are organising an event, you are responsible for the electrical safety of all equipment used — including equipment brought by stallholders and performers. Request PAT testing certificates from all vendors and check that their equipment is in good condition on the day.

Pre-Event PAT Testing

Contact Green Tag PAT to arrange PAT testing for your summer event equipment. We can test your equipment on-site or at our base before the event date.
